Learning to look: an afternoon at Ettumanoor
Most visitors photograph the Nataraja and leave. Spend an hour on the smaller registers instead and the wall starts telling you how it was made, in what order, and by how many hands.
The large figures are what everyone comes for, and they deserve it. But they are finished work, and finished work hides its making.
Read the edges
Go to where a register meets a doorway, or where a wall has been repaired. That is where you see the yellow underdrawing still showing through a thin patch of colour, or a black line that was laid down slightly off and left. You learn more about how a mural is built from ten minutes at a damaged corner than from an hour in front of the best figure in the room.
